Circadian Rhythm Disorder

What is a circadian rhythm disorder

A circadian rhythm disorder is when your sleep-wake cycle doesn’t match daily life.

Your brain has an internal "master clock" that controls when you feel sleepy or alert. When that clock drifts out of sync — due to genetics, irregular schedules, light exposure, or shift work — you end up trying to sleep or wake at the wrong times.

This isn't about willpower or discipline. It's a medical condition that can leave you feeling exhausted, frustrated, and out of sync for years.

Common circadian disorders

Different body clocks. Same need for care.

Delayed Sleep Phase Disorder (DSPD)

You can't fall asleep until very late at night (often 2AM or later) and struggle to wake up for work or school.

Advanced Sleep Phase Disorder (ASPD)

You feel exhausted early in the evening and wake up before dawn, even when you want to sleep later.

Non-24-Hour Sleep-Wake Disorder

Your sleep cycle shifts later each day, making it impossible to maintain a consistent schedule. Common in people who are blind.

Shift Work Disorder

Working overnight or rotating shifts disrupts your sleep, leaving you exhausted and unable to adjust.

Circadian rhythm disorder symptoms

If these feel familiar, your body clock may need expert help.

  • Struggling to fall asleep at a "regular" bedtime

  • Waking up far too early or unable to wake up on time

  • Feeling wide awake at night but exhausted during the day

  • Brain fog, mood swings, or difficulty concentrating

  • Trouble functioning at work, school, or events

  • Sleep problems tied to shift work or travel

Circadian rhythm disorder treatment

It’s not your fault, your body clock just needs real care.

Circadian rhythm disorders are medical conditions, not just "bad habits." Many people live for years thinking they’re just night owls or lack discipline — but it’s not about willpower. With an expert diagnosis and a plan designed for your schedule, you can get your sleep back in sync and feel like yourself again.
